Your book will take on a different balance in order to draw the real world when you graduate from college. You could make more money, have a better credit history, or have a payment on your current loan that no longer fits your means. With private student loans, refinancing provides another opportunity to alter terms of your repayment.

A new loan is not necessarily a better solution. The trick is that you compare the total costs before acting on a change.

    What Happens When You Refinance?

Refinancing, on the other hand, is where you take out a new loan with a private lender that pays off one or more of your existing loans. The interest rate, the amount of your monthly payment, or the term may vary on the new loan.

A clear-cut example may be the interest rate; keeping other terms similar, a lower interest rate lowers your overall cost of borrowing. Longer repayment means lower monthly bill but higher total interest paid.

And, like with any loan, your credit score may influence whether you get a rate-and what rate you’ll ultimately receive.

3 Warning Signs to Re- Assess Your Loan

    Consider comparing new offers if:

    • It may be as simple as your credit has improved: You might now qualify for a better rate.
    • Your income is more stable: You may be eligible for better terms.
    • Your payments feel too large: A new repayment term may help simplify your budgeting.

None of these signs promise saving. Compare actual offers before deciding.

    How to Compare Refinancing Offers?

In the course of finding a refinance private student loans, ask for quotes from a lot of loan providers. Avoid only focusing on the typical interest rate that is listed, and rather look at the APR โˆ’ also called an annual percentage rate โˆ’ charges, repayment time period, and total payment amount.

Confirm if the new rate is fixed or variable as well. Meaning that, a fixed rate will remain the same, while a variable rate may increase or decrease.

Before you sign, check whether your lender provides hardship assistance โˆ’ and what your options are if a payment is missed. Please read the whole agreement to understand what changes.

Make the Numbers Work for You

Private student loans become a burden when the terms misalign with your income and goals. You may even want to consider refinancing some of those private student loans down the road into a new loan that has a better rate or repayment term. Prior to switching review interest costs, payments, and repayment time periods, you need to make the right decision that will have a positive impact on your wallet rather than just lowering this month’s bill.
